How to Tell If Your Real Estate Agent Is a Strong Negotiator

When you’re buying or selling a home, negotiation is one of the most important skills your real estate agent can bring to the table. A strong negotiator does more than simply ask for a higher price or push for a lower one—they understand the bigger picture and know how to protect their client’s interests throughout the transaction. In my experience, good negotiation starts with preparation. An agent should understand the market, comparable sales, the property’s strengths and weaknesses, and the motivations of the other party before making or responding to an offer.

Another sign of strong negotiation skills is the ability to communicate clearly without creating unnecessary conflict. Real estate negotiations can become emotional, especially when a buyer and seller have very different expectations. I believe the best agents know how to stay calm, professional, and focused on the end goal. They listen carefully, ask the right questions, and know when to push back—and just as importantly, when to compromise. Negotiation isn't about "winning" every point; it's about finding terms that make sense for the client while keeping the transaction moving forward.

You should also look at how an agent handles more than just the purchase price. Some of the most important negotiations involve contingencies, inspection findings, repairs, credits, appraisal issues, timelines, and other contract terms. A skilled agent understands how these pieces work together and can identify which terms are worth fighting for and which may not be. Before hiring an agent, ask them to walk you through a real negotiation they've handled. Their answer can tell you a lot about how they think, how they prepare, and how they advocate for their clients.

Ultimately, strong negotiation skills come from a combination of experience, market knowledge, communication, preparation, and judgment. You want an agent who can confidently represent your interests without losing sight of the bigger objective. Whether you're buying your first home or selling a property you've owned for years, the right agent should be someone you trust to remain level-headed and strategic when the negotiations get complicated. That's the kind of representation I strive to provide for every client I work with.
